A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of a brick red keystone bearing a gold stylized representation of a steam locomotive engine, front view, and on the top rim of the keystone a scarlet fleur-de-lis between and extending above two black disks on each side, all in front of a curved spray of gold laurel leaves on each side of the keystone terminating at the disks and issuing from a black threefold scroll curved in base and reverse curved at the sides, inscribed "THE" on the left, "IRON HORSE" in base, and "MEN" on the right, all letters gold.
Brick red and golden yellow (gold) are the colors for the Transportation Corps. The fleur-de-lis in scarlet, the color of the Meritorious Unit Streamer, and the gold laurel leaves symbolic of honor, denote the unit's World War II decoration, Meritorious Unit Commendation, European Theater. The four black disks connote gunstones and signify the Group's participation in four campaigns, World War II; the disks also allude to rolling stock. The stylized historic locomotive engine refers to the organization's Railway Grand Division origin, present Transportation Railway mission and motto. The keystone, an emblem for Pennsylvania, "The Keystone State," indicates the unit's original affiliation with the Pennsylvania Railroad and the present location of the Headquarters.
The distinctive unit insignia was approved on 2 April 1971.
